SEASON OF LENT

So here we are already considering the 40 days of lent. We began on Ash Wednesday with a lantern release, sending the things which bind us into the night sky. Traditionally Lent runs from Ash Wednesday until Maundy Thursday. Each week we shall be sharing a theme to focus on during this period of reflection and renewal. The temptation of Jesus in the wilderness leads us to reflect on our own weaknesses. Members of our mailing list will have received an extract from C.S. Lewis satirical book, ‘The Screwtape Letters’ In which we read an ironic portrayal of human life from the point of view of the demon, Screwtape.

As he writes to his nephew and ‘trainee’ Wormwood. Screwtape delights in observing the negative behaviours of human beings towards each other; and relishes instructing his protégé in the art of temptation, coercion and manipulation. Lewis’s understanding into human nature and the work of temptation is insightful and thought provoking!
